Idebenone FAQ

Written by Anti Aging Systems

What is Idebenone?

Idebenone is an enhanced version of the Coenzyme Q10, which is a compound found in 99% of the cells in the human body. A powerful antioxidant, CoQ10 helps to convert food into energy and fight “free radicals”; damaging particles in the body that can cause cell death and damage if left unchecked.

As an enhanced version of CoQ10, Idebenone combines both the power of the CoQ10 compound and further benefits to the body, including elevated energy levels and brain function. Many in the antiaging community herald Idebenone as a “miracle drug” as it is a stronger antioxidant than Vitamin E.

Why was Idebenone created?

Idebenone was originally created as a drug to treat the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease and other cognitive problems such as poor concentration or memory. By 2010, it was being trialled for treating neuromuscular diseases such as Duchenne muscular dystrophy or Friedreich’s ataxia and has been a designated “orphan drug” (a drug developed to treat rare medical conditions that would not be profitable to produce without assistance from the government) since 2007.

In 2020, the randomized, double-blind clinical EITRS study launched [1] – this will take place over 5 years and is due to complete in 2025. The EITRS study assesses 142 patients aged between 40-75 with a confirmed clinical diagnosis of idiopathic REM sleep behavior disorder (iRBD). This trial will use oral Idebenone and a matching placebo to explore the efficacy, safety and tolerability of Idebenone for treating iRBD and has been put together partly based on the efficacy of Idebenone in previous trials for regularing mitophagy in those with Parkinson’s disease.

Idebenone links with skin health

Past research has shown that Idebenone may have beneficial effects on skin health due to its antioxidant properties. A study from 2005 [2] assessed the clinical efficacy of 0.5% and 1.0% Idebenone on photodamaged skin with a 30% overall improvement score. Skin hydration was seen to be boosted by 37%, and a 29% reduction in fine links and wrinkles.

Does Idebenone go by any other names?

Yes – Idebenone has a number of other names it is commonly known by [3]. These include:

  • Hydroxydecyl Benzoquinone
  • Hydroxydecyl Ubiquinone
  • Idebenona
  • Idébénone
  • 2,3-dimethoxy-5-methyl-6-(10-hydroxydecyl)-1,4-benzoquinone (this is the composition of Idebenone).

Can Idebenone be used with other supplements?

Yes – past research has suggested that using Idebenone alongside Vitamin C may further boost skin health by working together as antioxidants and free radical scavengers.
