Idebenone is an enhanced version of the Coenzyme Q10, which is a compound found in 99% of the cells in the human body. A powerful antioxidant, CoQ10 helps to convert food into energy and fight “free radicals”; damaging particles in the body that can cause cell death and damage if left unchecked.

Idebenone was originally created as a drug to treat the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease and other cognitive problems such as poor concentration or memory. In 2020, the randomized, double-blind clinical EITRS study launched [1] – this will take place over 5 years and is due to complete in 2025. The EITRS study assesses 142 patients aged between 40-75 with a confirmed clinical diagnosis of idiopathic REM sleep behavior disorder (iRBD). This trial will use oral Idebenone and a matching placebo to explore the efficacy, safety and tolerability of Idebenone for treating iRBD and has been put together partly based on the efficacy of Idebenone in previous trials for regularing mitophagy in those with Parkinson’s disease.
Past research has shown that Idebenone may have beneficial effects on skin health due to its antioxidant properties. A study from 2005 [2] assessed the clinical efficacy of 0.5% and 1.0% Idebenone on photodamaged skin with a 30% overall improvement score. Skin hydration was seen to be boosted by 37%, and a 29% reduction in fine links and wrinkles.
