IAS product spotlights - Epitalon

Epitalon® is a synthetic peptide derived from the natural substance called epithalamion (this is a polypeptide extract from the bovine pineal glands). Epitalon® was first isolated from the pineal gland, a small endocrine gland located in the brain that helps the body to regulate the sleep/wake cycle by means of melatonin production.

Russia spearheaded the initial research into Epitalon® in terms of its potential for aiding the aging process and how it impacts various physiological processes. These studies showed that Epitalon® has an ability to regulate the production of telomerase – this enzyme is associated with telomere health.

Epitalon® is also well known for its ability to help the body regulate its internal body clock by aiding Melatonin production. This in turn helps to regulate the circadian rhythm, reduce insomnia, prevent fatigue and can also help with jet lag.

What are Telomeres?

Telomeres are the protective caps at the end of DNA strands, resembling the plastic tips on shoelaces. They naturally shorten as cells divide and age, which is considered a natural marker of cellular aging. When telomeres become too short, cells may undergo senescence or apoptosis, leading to a decline in tissue and organ function.

Epitalon® is believed to work by influencing the length of telomeres by promoting the activation of telomerase. Telomerase is an enzyme that adds DNA sequences to the ends of chromosomes, counteracting the natural shortening process. In turn, this may help to preserve cell viability and functionality.

Realigning the Body Clock

The internal body clock is key to how we sleep and wake each day – this is also known as the “circadian rhythm”. If this becomes dysregulated, it can have detrimental effects on aspects of life such as sleeping, working, cognitive functioning and overall wellbeing. Metabolism and digestion are also impacted by poor sleep/wake cycles, so regulating this is very important.

Epitalon® contains amino acids which work to re-align the body clock by ensuring the right levels of Melatonin are produced.

Other benefits

Epitalon® has also been associated with other aspects of anti-aging including:

  1. Cellular Protection: Longer telomeres are associated with increased cellular protection and resistance to oxidative stress. Epitalon®’s purported ability to support telomerase activity may contribute to enhanced cellular defense mechanisms.
  2. Potential Health Benefits: Some studies suggest that Epitalon® may have broader health benefits, such as improved immune function, enhanced cognitive performance, and reduced risk of age-related diseases.

Epitalon® is suitable for both vegans and vegetarians.
