A clash between a frustrated medical community and alternative medicine

Written by LIPPMAN, Ph.D., Richard

For more than 25 years, the American medical community has been dismayed by an ever-increasing number of patients who turn to alternative medicine for treatment. Indeed, more than half of sick Americans seek alternative doctors, such as naturopaths, and few of these patients discuss their treatments with their conventional doctors.

This phenomenon is especially true of chronic sufferers of cancer, chronic indigestion, back pain, arthritis, persistent headaches and hormone imbalances. Doctors are often puzzled by this unique American behavior, but they shouldn’t be since patients are often treated with scorn and derision when they reveal their alternative treatments.

Still another roadblock in the thinking of doctors is their knee-jerk reactions to many chronic problems. Namely, they quickly repeat what they learned at medical school 20 or 30 years ago. This information is usually outdated and does not coincide with current fact-based medical thinking.

Medical knowledge has been doubling every seven years, but unfortunately, it is often buried in an avalanche of research papers. However, some doctors have kept up with their medical journals and have continued learning. They are able to provide patients with an accurate assessment of current treatments, and they may even embrace both conventional and alternative medical advances.

Another obstacle in conventional medical thinking involves the constant ongoing barrage of print and TV advertising purporting magic-bullet cures for chronic problems. Allow me to state emphatically that magic-bullet cures are rare. Indeed, I am only aware of two magic-bullet drugs called Gleevec® and Sovaldi® that have proven to be effective against some forms of leukemia and hepatitis C, respectively. However, these magic-bullet drugs each cost between $80,000 and $120,000 for a multiple month course of treatment.

I contend that many chronic conditions can be bettered by applying cutting-edge, state-of-the-art, preventative and regenerative medicine (1). Allow me to explain by showing you examples of differences between alternative medicine and conventional medicine.

Improvements in hearing without hearing aids

For example, chronic hearing loss caused by aging may be the result of adrenal deficiencies of the hormone aldosterone (2,3,4). The mass media and conventional doctors encourage the purchasing of expensive hearing aids costing up to $7,000, and they’re not even covered by insurance!

Instead, patients should apply aldosterone ear spray (Aldo-Spray™) once daily. This single dose increases the hearing up to 30 or 40 decibels after a few hours and the effect continues throughout the day. Even more important, word recognitionimproves dramatically, allowing patients to leave their expensive hearing aids at home.

Another benefit of aldosterone is that it prevents dizziness, especially if a patient stands up suddenly. Fourth, it prevents excessive urine flow (dysuria) and multiple visits to the bathroom. Fifth, sleep is improved, especially if a person combines Aldo-Spray™ at bedtime with melatonin (MZS™) and 20 units (two sprays) of the hormone oxytocin (Oxy-Pro™). Note that oxytocin may also be used for improvements in sexual intimacy, especially when combined with a little bio-identical testosterone cream.

The alternative method using Aldo-Spray™ and other natural remedies improves restful sleep, avoids expensive hearing aids, and prevents unnecessary trips to the bathroom. Thus, expensive conventional medicines such as Flomax®, Lunestra®, and Ambien CR® are not required.

Relief from hot flashes, vaginal dryness and malaise

A second example of the differences between conventional and alternative medicine involves the all-important balancing of hormones. Alternative medicine reasons as follows: When progesterone is deficient, the estrogen receptors become less sensitive to estrogen. Therefore, women with sufficient estrogen will nevertheless have signs of estrogen deficiency such as vaginal dryness, night sweats and hot flashes.

When 15 or 20 mg of natural progesterone cream is applied during the 12th to 26th day of the menstrual cycle, estrogen receptors are again sensitized and vaginal lubrication returns along with diminished hot flashes, night-sweating and urinary-tract difficulties. In men, this same dose helps to reduce swollen prostates, a phenomenon called benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH). For the best results, a patient should combine daily progesterone with 5 mg of folate and 50 mg of vitamin B6. A normal physiologic level of progesterone also prevents cracking and grinding of teeth due to tense jaw muscles while sleeping.

In contrast, conventional medicine typically has only birth control pills, muscle relaxers and antidepressants to offer.

Mother Nature’s universal hormone balance

Interestingly, the role of natural progesterone is ubiquitous and encompassing. It is definitely not the ‘one-trick pony’ treatment of conventional medicine. Natural progesterone is instead a universal balancer of all steroid hormones either by altering their metabolism or by changing their interactions with their receptors (5).

For example, the role of the steroid hormone cortisol is to break down tissue. However, excess cortisol inhibits calcium and magnesium absorption in the GI tract and this causes stress. Excess cortisol also prevents hormone production in the ovaries and testes as well as blocking progesterone receptors.

Natural progesterone offsets these adverse effects by converting to allopregnanolone, which, in turn, binds to GABA receptors in the brain and causes restful sleep (1). This allows your brain and body to achieve better repair and rejuvenation compared to those who sleep fewer hours. In addition, cortisol-induced stress is improved. The conventional medical treatment is to influence the GABA receptors with drugs, such as Lunestra® and Ambien®, which cause an unnatural hypnotic sleep with many side effects.

Interestingly, natural progesterone is the only steroid that directly interferes with the receptor binding of cortisol. It neutralizes the tissue teardown (catalytic) effects of cortisol.

I have personally explored these progesterone benefits and I have found that 20 mg applied topically and perianally in the evenings allows me to sleep soundly and naturally for 8 to 8½ hours (1). Furthermore, while monitoring my bone loss with bone-density tests (DEXA scan), I found that the bone-loss effects of cortisol are stopped in their tracks after several months of nocturnal application.

Eye dryness resolved

Still another alternative benefit of natural progesterone is its use for dry eyes. Dry eyes are very common in people over the age of 50 years due to estrogen dominance in both women and men. If you are experiencing dry eyes, your conventional ophthalmologist will recommend only patented, heavily marketed lubricating eye drops that must be applied many times during the day.

My alternative remedy is to apply topically a tiny amount of natural progesterone cream to the eyelids and eye orbitals (sockets). If you suffer from allergies, also rub in a tiny amount (5,000 units) of vitamin A.

Rub the cream in using a circular motion for at least 10 seconds. My method directly addresses the underlying cause of dry eyes, unopposed estrogen that needs to be paired with its natural mate progesterone. Second, a vitamin A deficiency might be locally apparent in the thin and sensitive tissues of the eyelids. My alternative method solves the underlying problems of dry eyes and not merely the symptoms.

Many women have a progesterone deficiency since their bodies only produce it approximately 3 to 4 days after they ovulate (5). Women truly need a 14-day course of 15 to 20 mg daily starting from day 12 and ending day 26 of their menstrual cycle. All those practicing alternative medicine will understand and embrace this solution.

Improved immune system

Natural progesterone and not those synthetic progestins from conventional medicine, encourages an immune globulin called secretory IgA (5). IgA traps bacteria before they enter the vaginal tissues. Allergy and sinus problems are also often resolved with this wonderful IgA trapping mechanism.

Up-regulating our genes

At the genetic level, recent research has revealed that natural progesterone (not the synthetic progestins), stimulate and up-regulate the P53 gene. This turns on apoptosis, or the cell death of potential cancer cells. Furthermore, it down-regulates, or inhibits, the cancer-causing Bc12 gene (5). When the Bc12 gene is turned off, cell changes leading to cancer are effectively stopped.

Natural progesterone also down-regulates the polypeptide survivin, which is another way that progesterone protects against cancer. Thus, cancer cell formations are terminated at the genetic and molecular levels.

A similar effect is also realized when the paired hormones, hGH and IGF-1 are consumed daily (6). This critical hormone pair is an upstream, universal balancer of many of the body’s hormones.

Headaches resolved naturally

A third example of the differences between conventional and alternative medicine is in the treatment of headaches and migraines. Headaches have many causes that often involve stress (cortisol again) or the side effects of medications. I have come to realize that when a patient weans off synthetic medications, headaches will often subside by themselves.

Migraine headaches are more common in women than in men, and they often occur just before menstruation. This indicates that they are often hormone related, and conventional treatment with aspirin or ibuprofen does not work.

Instead, I routinely recommend a transdermal progesterone cream at the first sign of a headache. Apply 15 to 20 mg to the temples, the lower forehead, or the back of the neck. Do not overdose. More is not better. This is part of the wrong-headedness of conventional medicine.

Subsequently, use moderate finger pressure and massage in the natural cream for a few minutes. Apply a moderate, rotating pressure massage with your fingertips to the area of the forehead between the eyebrows. Repeat the treatment every hour or 2 for a total of 3 applications daily. Migraine relief may also be achieved by using acupressure or acupuncture.

During this treatment, I also recommend one spray daily of OxyPro™ and twice-daily consumption of a Boswellia herbal capsule to reduce inflammation.

As soon as you feel a headache approaching, write down everything you have done during the day. Headaches are often caused by something elemental, such as perfumed sheets (most laundry detergents) or products containing the artificial sweetener aspartame.

Do not rely on ‘rescue medicine’ after an illness occurs (1). Instead, use preventative medicine and natural remedies, such as balanced and paired hormones, especially Progesterone NaturalTM, oxytocin (OxyPro™), aldosterone (AldoPro™ and AldoSpray™), folate, vitamin B6, and your own common sense!
