Citric acid occurs naturally in citrus fruits such as lemons and limes. It acts as a preservative and also has protective effects when consumed, such as lowering the acid in your urine, killing bacteria that may occur in wound, and helping to prevent against gout (alongside sodium citrate and potassium citrate). It also helps with the absorption of other compounds within a dietary supplement.
