The PulmoLife – a lung age test that’s breath of fresh air
The PulmoLife is an innovative screening device, which can be used to maintain healthy lung function and warn against lung disease as we age.
Originally designed to detect chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), the PulmoLife offers far-reaching benefits as a general health screening tool.
By providing a quick, accurate calculation of ‘Lung age’ the PulmoLife is able to give you an overall picture of your general health and fitness. It allows you to carry out important pulmonary function tests in the comfort of your own home, and to check your lungs’ performance over time.
The importance of regular exercise and a healthy diet has been well documented, but how do we know if our antiaging routine is having an effect? The PulmoLife allows us to monitor our lung age as we grow older, and make any necessary adjustments to our lifestyle.
The importance of knowing your lung capacity age
Your lung age essentially tells you how your lungs are faring up against standard biological age markers of the general population. Your lung age is determined by lifestyle factors, such as diet, exercise and whether or not you smoke.
Having a lung age of an older person is a signal that changes need to be made. Having a significantly older lung age may be the first symptoms of COPD (Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease)
COPD is the fourth leading cause of death worldwide, according to the World Health Organisation. What makes it particularly deadly is that it is often undiagnosed in the early stages, which is when treatment could be the most effective.
Monitoring your own lung age is a good way of insuring against COPD as well as maintaining good health generally.
How does the PulmoLife spirometer work?
The PulmoLife is a handheld spirometer which provides an accurate assessment of ‘Lung Age’ against well known biological age markers. It is a simple, yet reliable way of detecting COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease symptoms) quickly and efficiently.
The PulmoLife spirometer records a patient’s lung age using FEV1 – Forced Expiratory Volume in the first second of expiration – which is the single best index for detecting COPD screening. You may see this index abbreviated as ‘FEV1 COPD’.
By comparing this FEV1% result with an individual’s expected results, the PulmoLife is able to provide an accurate assessment of their lung capacity age and risk of COPD.
What is COPD?
COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) is the name given to a collection of lung diseases, including chronic bronchitis, emphysema and chronic obstructive airways disease.
COPD is one of the most common lung diseases in the UK, usually affecting people over the age of 35. The main cause of COPD is smoking. The lungs become inflamed and, over time, this leads to permanent impairment of lung function.
In contrast to asthma, the harm caused to the lungs by COPD is usually irreversible and gets progressively worse over time. Yet, people experiencing COPD symptoms do not always recognise they have the first signs of COPD or seek medical help in time for treatment.
COPD dramatically increases a person’s lung capacity age, giving them the lung age of a much older person. Although the damage caused to the lungs through COPD cannot be reversed, by detecting COPD in the early stages through pulmonary function tests, further damage to the lungs can be lessened.

How to use the PulmoLife lung age test
The PulmoLife is simple and quick to use:
Switch it on
Select the male/female icon
Adjust the height entry
Key in your age and race
Blow into the machine.
The results will be clearly displayed, giving your FEV1 and their predicted FEV1%. Percentages below 80 will flash repeatedly and by pressing the scroll key, this will reveal your Lung capacity Age.
Reviews of the PulmoLife are consistently favourable, with GPs and nurses finding it to be a simple, efficient COPD screening tool. It is also highly recommended for home use as a general lung age test.
Although COPD treatment cannot offer a cure and, unlike conditions such as asthma, the damage to lungs is permanent, early detection can positively influence the disease course. It is, therefore, extremely important to screen people who are at risk.
By recording lung age simply and accurately, PulmoLife often provides a much needed deterrent for smokers, highlighting the damage caused by the disease as early as possible. It also allows people to make other changes to their lifestyle and diet.
Straightforward and easy to use, the PulmoLife COPD screening device is one of the only Pulmonary Function Tests to be recommended equally by doctors and for home use. Take one home today and breathe in the benefits. PulmoLife not only helps to guard against lung diseases but through simple and accurate Pulmonary Function Tests is also a valuable health and antiaging tool.
