Azilect / Rasagiline is a new medication which is used to treat Parkinson’s disease either as monotherapy (by itself) or in addition to levodopa therapy. Rasagiline (Azilect / Agilect) promotes increased and sustained levels of dopamine by selectively inhibiting an enzyme, monoamine oxidase-B.
Azilect is likely to also act beneficially through its ability to act as an anti-oxidant and an anti-apoptotic agent.
In clinical trials, Azilect has been found to be effective as a monotherapy (i.e. taken on its own), or when taken together with Levodopa (Sinemet), for both early and late stage Parkinson’s disease.
NOTE: This product is branded as Azilect and Agilect in Europe.
