Agomelatine has recently become officially approved in Europe under the trade names of Valdoxan®, Melitor® and Thymanax®.
It is an antidepressant developed by the pharmaceutical company Servier and is classified as a norepinephrine-dopamine disinhibitor (NDDI) due to its antagonism of the 5-HT receptor. Activation of 5-HT receptors by serotonin inhibits dopamine and norepinephrine release, whereas antagonism of 5-HT results in an enhancement of both dopamine and noradrenaline release.
