The IAS bulletin is released as information becomes available, normally on a quarterly basis. By joining our mailing list you will be able to receive regular copies of this fascinating insight into "cutting edge" anti-aging medicine even before it is posted onto this site! As usual, all information contained within is educational and subject to IAS terms and conditions. Only your physician can determine your precise needs and requirements. However, all information is reported as accurately as possible following the double blind placebo clinical leads wherever possible. Listed below are the currently available issues of the IAS anti-aging bulletin. The main topics of each have been highlighted. If interested in an individual topic, simply click the issue of your choice to download. | All materials are copyrighted and cannot be used for public dissemination or use without the express prior written permission of IAS. |
Bulletins are set at 72dpi in order to speed download times. These should look good on screen but may not be suitable for printing. Please note that individual articles can be viewed at the AAM A-Z section by clicking on the product name on any product page.
WINTER 2003
- 1. Squaring the curve- proven longevity medicines
- "Squaring the Curve" is an expression that refers to the extension of maximum possible life, (because the demographic curve looks like a square). Life extension is an objective for anti-aging, even if it is just as a result of preventative therapies being applied for long-term optimal health. The great leaps forward in longevity have come from our changes to social structures, access to fresh water/ foods, sanitation, antibiotics and medical therapies, (to treat disease). The next will occur from the ultimate preventative medicine- Anti-Aging Medicine, and it will come sooner to those who are already prepared to start thinking about their future health, long before the symptoms or signs of disease have begun. We are therefore pleased to announce that 4 experts in their fields, bring to us relevant information, (from animal studies) proven to extend life-span, and their possible implications and applications for human use.
- 2. Centrophenoxine: A true life extension drug?
- James South MA reviews a proven memory drug and how it has been shown to extend the life-span of animals. Much of the work focuses on Professor Imre. Zs.-Nagy's Membrane Hypothesis Of Aging, and how and indeed why cell structures change with age. What does that do to the individual cells ability to communicate and work effectively? And how does centrophenoxine alter and help to reverse that process, enabling the cell to become more efficient and in the process extend animal life spans by up to 30%? You can find out here. Furthermore, James South also adds to this article a very interesting insight to the role of water, and the evidence that virtually all of us don't drink enough water, and the thinking that we drink tea, coffee or beer instead is okay, when it is actually contrary to the absorption of water.
- 3. Melatonin Prolongs Life
- Walter Pierpaoli MD, discusses the roles of Melatonin, specifically how it has been shown to extend the life-span of animals, and indeed what that can mean for humans. Dr. Pierpaoli reminds us of the benefits of melatonin supplementation to improve depression, skin, hair, sleep and well-being etc., and cites some particular patient cases. Dr. Pierpaoli goes on to extort the fact that melatonin is much more than just being the most potent anti-oxidant in nature, and that it displays many more properties, helping to re-regulate the hormonal cycles and that it is- in effect, a protector of the pineal gland, hence a protector from aging itself! Dr. Pierpaoli's enthusiasm will be self evident in this article, but as Melatonin has been shown to extend the life-span of animals by as much as 20% whilst also displaying signs of "aging reversal" in younger animals, it cannot and should not be overlooked.
- 4. The mechanism of the anti-aging effect of Deprenyl
- We are most pleased to have Pharmacologist and Medical Doctor, Professor Joseph Knoll, submitting his first and indeed a most important piece to the IAS Anti-Aging Bulletin. There is perhaps no one better placed in the world today to inform us about the multitude of roles and benefits of Deprenyl, this is because Dr. Knoll is the originator and developer of Deprenyl and is responsible for the mass of published papers on its uses and benefits since the 1960s. Fundamentally this is a technical article, but those with the perseverance to read it through a few times will discover many brilliant statements. (Those who don't have perseverance should consider reading James South's article on Deprenyl published in the Spring 2001 IAS Anti-Aging Bulletin). Deprenyl has a wide variety of benefits, including libido enhancement, memory improvement, treatment for senile dementias (particularly Parkinson's) and well-being/ depression. However, as Dr. Knoll points out in this article, its method of action is much more than just being a MAO-B inhibitor, and the fact that it has extended the life-span of animals by up to 40% is a clear example that slowing brain aging, (in this case by slowing Dopamine decline) is a fundamental part of anti-aging medicine. This article will enlighten you as to the radical proposal from Dr. Knoll that aging begins with the production of the sex hormones and that Deprenyl could be considered as an anti-aging medicine from puberty!
- 5. Calorie Restriction Mimetics
- A great article by Marios Kyriazis M.D. about what many people consider as the one proven human life-extension method- calorie restriction- literally eating less! As has been highlighted in animal experiments by the renowned scientist, Roy Walford M.D., calorie restriction can radically extend life-span, possibly through reduced free radical activity, better hormonal regulation or even less glycosylation, Dr. Kyriazis proposes and looks at the reasons. But he goes on to be practical, by highlighting substances that have been proven to mimic calorie restriction, an important job, because whilst eating less can be considered by us all, always being hungry and perhaps on the point of starvation is an unpleasant experience few of us what to have regularly. Dr. Kyriazis introduces us to a number of calorie restriction agents that could give us the benefits of calorie restriction without having to undertake a hunger strike. In particular, Dr. Kyriazis looks at recent scientific evidence about how Resveratrol and Metformin have been shown to positively change the so-called longevity genes.
FALL 2003
- 1. The body's largest organ- the skin.
- The skin is the largest organ in the human body and its role is far more fundamental that just providing an "outer" cover. Apart from protection, it offers sensory perception, heat control and is also a major outlet for toxins. Naturally, the very fact that our skin is so visible, makes it the first place that people often judge our aging. Little wonder then, that the skin is one of the most pampered of all our bodies. This Bulletin has three cutting-edge skin articles, and as well as our own resident Geriatric physician, Marios Kyriazis M.D., we are pleased to introduce two new contributors, who are also skin experts, specifically; Professor Zaenker and Professor Ionescu from Germany. This is your opportunity to catch up on the latest research and thinking about skin aging!
- 2. Skin Aging: When the dimples become wrinkles.
- Marios Kyriazis M.D. takes a broad view of the various causes of skin aging, and contrasts various theories of aging, in particular the free radical and the glycation theory of aging and how these processes affect skin. We are all too familiar with the affects of skin aging and how they manifest themselves as wrinkles etc., Dr. Kyriazis presents both the reasons for this, and also a broad spectrum of proven oral and topical products that have been efficacious in treating and indeed preventing the signs of skin aging from occurring. With an article such as this you can get to the crux of the matter, rather than the hype that is all too-often seen in the advertising of skin creams etc.
- 3. Preventing skin damage from radiotherapy.
- We are honored to introduce for the first time, Professor Kurt Zaenker, M.D. from the University of Witten in Germany. With his first contribution to the IAS Anti-Aging Bulletin, Professor Zaenker discusses the results with the use of a topical melatonin cream, called PraevoSkin(, and its effectiveness in the recovery of skin for patients undergoing radiotherapy for cancer. Whilst this will be of great importance to cancer patients, there is also a broader aspect to the use of topical melatonin hinted at in the article, this includes excellent after-sun (i.e. after radiation) recovery and hence reduction of skin aging. As melatonin is one of the most potent natural anti-oxidants known to man, this article is a good example of how we are now seeing the useful development of topical melatonin products and their effectiveness.
- 4. The photoaging of human skin
- We are also extremely pleased to have Professor John Ionescu, Ph.D. of the Neukirchen Klinic, near Munich, Germany, also writing for the IAS Anti-Aging Bulletin for the first time. As one of Europe's leading dermatologists, Dr. Ionescu has been involved in a lot of ground-breaking work, particularly with allergies and toxins. In this article, Dr. Ionescu highlights the damage that sun can cause human skin, and when you realise that up-to 90% of "normal" skin aging is caused by exposure to sunshine, it therefore becomes apparent that we need protection from it. However, the tanned look has been popular since Coco Channel in the 1920's made it fashionable, so Dr. Ionescu introduces us to Solaris ®, a 27 sun-protection factor cream that actually allows us to have a tan, but helps to prevent the damage of photoaging. Dr. Ionescu also introduces us to Energo ®, the latest anti-aging skin formula from Europe that has unique anti-free radical and anti-glycation ingredients.
SUMMER 2003
- 1. Treating the theories of aging - part 2.
- In part two of our series about "treating the theories of aging," we concentrate on two that are primarily caused by the infamous "free radicals." First there is the actual "free radical theory of aging," and secondly, there is the "mitochondrial theory of aging." As usual, our biochemist, James South MA, not only explains the reasoning behind the problems, but also suggests lifestyle, nutritional and medicinal methods that have been clinically proven to assist in the control of the problem in question. These two theories are probably the most likely cause of most of the aging damage that takes place in our bodies, therefore the interested reader is strongly recommended to take note of the information that is on offer.
- 2. The free radical theory of aging.
- James South MA, takes an in-depth view of the formation of free radicals in the body, and how these unstable molecules go on to create more free radicals. He then explains how, antioxidants, or free radical scavengers "come to the rescue" and why it is important to take a cross section of antioxidants, because only certain antioxidants neutralize certain free radicals. Furthermore, information about potent individual nutritional and medicinal antioxidants are also discussed in detail.
- 3. The mitochondrial theory of aging.
- The mitochondria are the vital organelles found in every cell of the body that are there to literally create the "energy of life"- ATP. However, as you will discover when you read this article, there are many unique aspects about mitochondria that don't prevail in other areas of the body, and some of the uniqueness may have an "Achilles heel." For example, why do mitochondria change in their size, lessen in their numbers, and become more inefficient over time? Also, why are they responsible for producing something like 90% of the free radicals in a normal healthy aging adult? The answers to these questions can be found in this article, along with a series of protocols and products that have been clinically proven to be effective in the protection and enhancement of mitochondria. If you need a reason to read this article, then note this statement by the author: "I am personally convinced that the mitochondrial theory of aging, represents the single most important cause of aging and age-related diseases."
SPRING 2003
- 1. Treating the theories of aging- part 1.
- It is reasonable to assume that to treat any disease, one must first understand how it is caused. In this way, aging is probably no different to any other medically recognized disorder, in that we must first know the question before finding an answer. To this end, we have begun a two-part series about some of the most likely major causes of why we age, bought to you from some of the world's leading authorities in aging. But we don't just present you with some of the potential reasons why we age, some interventions are also suggested that can help alleviate, slow and reverse the condition. Enjoy!
- 2. Can we cure aging?
- For the first time in the IAS Anti-Aging Bulletin ® we are pleased to have Michael Fossel, M.D., Ph.D. writing for us. Professor Fossel is the Head of Medicine at Michigan State University, the Editor in Chief of the Journal of Anti-Aging Medicine and the author of numerous publications and articles. In this issue, he describes to us the unique position where medicine currently stands, at least in respect to the advancements of understanding and managing the aging process. In particular, Professor Fossel looks at the importance of the role of telomeres on their impact upon cells, aging and human disease.
- 3. Cross link breakers and inhibitors
- Marios Kyriazis M.D., Bios, the founder of the British Longevity Society takes a very practical viewpoint on the glycosylation theory of aging. There has been a lot of talk recently about potential cross-link breakers, as well as inhibitors. Dr. Kyriazis points out that far from being rare, they are actually quite common, the role of the process on cells and therefore aging, as well as potential mediators such as carnosine, aminoguanidine, ALT711, acarbose and metformin are discussed.
- 4. The membrane hypothesis of aging
- Another high point for the IAS Anti-Aging Bulletin ® is an article written by the renowned Imre. Zs.-Nagy, M.D., the Head of Debrechen Medical University in Hungary and the Editor in Chief of the Journal Archives of Gerontology and Geriatrics. Professor Zs.-Nagy has been involved with experimental Gerontology since the 1960's, having been a student of the famous Fritz Verzar. He explains the conception of his own hypothesis of aging, which is quite different to other existing forms, and his trials and tribulations over decades to find the answer(s) to aging itself. Finally, Professor Zs-Navy discusses the developments of centrophenoxine and its new analogue BCE-001, which in animal trials are extending the life span of rats by an incredible 40%.
WINTER 2002
- 1. Fighting infection- Improving the immune system.
- Over the course of a lifetime it is of course inevitable that we expose ourselves to infection. It is also a fact that the immune system declines as we age, thus making the chance of a serious infection when we are older a greater possibility. Infections themselves can kill, but even when they don't they can do considerable damage. This Bulletin looks at why our immune systems decline and what we can do to support and enhance its vital function.
- 2. Aging and immunity: The battle against entropy.
- James South MA, biochemist takes an in-depth view of the changes to the immune system as we age. Importantly, he then discusses in turn 14 nutrients, hormones and drugs that have been shown to be highly beneficial in enhancing and improving immune function and reducing the possibility of infection. Highly recommended reading if you don't want to become sick!
- 3. Biostim ®, the natural infection preventative.
- Another useful article by James South MA, this time about Biostim ®. This interesting product has been used for over a decade in some parts of Europe. Essentially, it is only really used when one is well. It helps to promote the manufacture of white blood cells, which in turn enhance immunity against infection. Don't wait until you are sick to treat it, we all understand that prevention is better than cure.
- 4. James South MA: My personal supplement program.
- James South is not only one of the brightest individuals you are ever likely to meet (I like to call him a walking encyclopaedia), but he is also one of the most dedicated people when it comes to optimal health nutrition and anti-aging medicine. You can find out why, and indeed what he does for himself by reading this article.
FALL 2002
- 1. The Chemistry of Sex
- This Bulletin takes an in-depth view of one of the most evocative subjects in life, a subject we are all interested in, no matter what age we are- sex. New attitudes and approaches to an active sex-life in older age have now radically altered from those of our grand parents, or indeed, even our parents. Much of this has been achieved with the introduction of new pharmacological interventions, better biological understands of the sexual process and of course improved general health in latter years. We hope you enjoy and learn about some of these new ideas in the articles enclosed here.
- 2. The maintenance of sexual function in older people.
- One of London's leading sexologists and psychiatrists, Dr. Michael Perring, takes us through a clinical assessment and approach to treating a patient with sexual problems. Dr. Perring's approach looks at both psychological reasons for the lack of satisfaction, as well as physiological reasons why sexual desire and performance declines in latter years.
- 3. Better sex through chemistry.
- This interview is with John Morgenthaler, the founder of Smart Publications, one of the most prolific and leading sources of information for "alternative" health and medicine. One of John's most best selling books is Better Sex Through Chemistry and in this interview he talks about how and why the book has had an impact on people's approaches and thoughts about their sex lives.
- 4. The libido enhancing tree bark extract.
- Drug researcher Robert Mason PhD takes a look at the only FDA approved aphrodisiac - yohimbine. This pharmaceutical extract from the African yohimbe tree bark has long been known for its properties of arousal, indeed before Viagra ® was approved it was the front-line treatment for erectile dysfunction. Dr. Mason discusses how and why yohimbine has the sexual arousal and stimulating effect that it does.
- 5. Beyond Viagra ®: The latest treatments for erectile dysfunction.
- Pharmacologist, Phil Micans PharmB takes us through the latest international drug approaches to treat erectile dysfunction, a condition that is believed to affect 300 million men worldwide! Specifically, the drugs Viagra ®, alprostadil and apomorphine are described as to their effects, methodology, management, contraindications and side effects etc. What we discover is that a whole new approach to the treatment and control of male impotence and indeed even female impotence is emerging.
SUMMER 2002
- 1. Staying Alert, Focused and Clear
- This Bulletin covers the difficult topic of attention, concentration, focus and clarity. It's a complicated subject, not least because often it is difficult to ascertain exactly what the problem is. After all, there is a thin line between concentration, boredom, attention, vigilance and alertness etc. However, in this issue we look at some of the key regimes that have been successful in alleviating and controlling these various issues.
- 2. Beating Attention Deficit Disorder
- The biochemist and lecturer James South MA takes us through some of the different "brain" reasons why different forms of ADD may occur. He also introduces to us some of the different nutrients and drugs that have shown promise in combating these problems. If you want to get an overall picture of why ADD may occur then you should read this article.
- 3. Eugeroics, the new stimulants
- Researcher Robert Mason PhD takes a new look at the two unique stimulants Adrafinil and Modafinil. His findings indicate that both of them remain as unique as when they appeared in 1997 and that they continue to lead the field in the treatment of narcolepsy, cataplexy and insomnia.
- 4. Vasopressin, the Anti-aging, Cognitive Enhancing Neuro-peptide
- At last we have an article on the fast acting peptide hormone vasopressin! And this one written by anti-aging specialist Ward Dean MD. Dr. Dean informs us about the known qualities of vasopressin as a treatment for diabetes insipidus, amnesia and memory imprinting, but also informs us about animal studies that showed that vasopressin treated animals lived longer.
- 5. The 3rd Monte Carlo Antiaging Conference
- The Editor of the Anti-Aging Bulletin, pharmacologist, Phil Micans PharmB., tells us all about this forthcoming exciting and breakthrough event. September is not so far away and if you want to experience this learning, practical conference and save money you need to read this article now!
SPRING 2002
- 1. Breakthroughs and Discoveries
- This first issue of 2002 takes a different view and format from all previous bulletins. In this issue we ask practising anti-aging physicians what success they have had with their patients utilizing anti-aging medicine, and indeed we ask how and why they judge certain products and protocols that are to be used. This issue can give you an insight into how the professionals decide how you are treated!
- 2. Anti-depressive procedures
- Richard Brown MD is one of America's leading psychiatrists and a strong advocate of international cutting-edge technologies. In this, (his first article for the Anti-Aging Bulletin), he describes the nature of some of his patients' depression. He then goes on to explain how and why he utilized various anti-depressive procedures and the great results that those patients have now obtained. Just some of the pharmaceuticals that Dr. Brown elaborates on include, SAMe, Stablon ®, Edronax ®, Picamilone and Pramiracetam.
- 3. A patient's assessment for anti-aging medicine
- In this article, one of the UK's leading anti-aging physicians, Marios Kyriazis M.D., explains the process in which he evaluated one particular female patient for anti-aging medicine. He then goes on to describe the regime that she ended up with. This is an interesting article because the patient in question was already a healthy lady, who was knowledgeable about optimal health and was already taking numerous supplements. Dr. Kyriazis explains how he fine-tuned her program, and helped to eliminate particular supplements that were already being taken in another form, and therefore improved the overall objective of her anti-aging program.
- 4. A 26-year case study report of a patient treated with Gerovital-H3 ®
- Once again, Mircea Dumitru Ph.D. M.D., (who is perhaps the best person alive who can describe the precise use of Professor Ana Aslan's original anti-aging treatment), takes us through a remarkable case history. Perhaps what makes this article so interesting is the length of time that this patient was studied - over a period of a quarter of a century. Dr. Dumitru concludes that at the end of the study the patient had bio-markers indicating that he was a healthy 70-year old, however he was in-fact chronologically very close to 100!
- 5. The essential cyclicity of life
- Once again we are pleased that Walter Pierpaoli MD is writing for the Anti-Aging Bulletin. In this short report, Dr. Pierpaoli outlines his research that indicates that the pineal gland is the accelerator or slower of aging. He proposes that some scientists have to be more forthright and even perhaps radical in their approach and thinking to aging. He makes the case that we must be pro-active about the aging disorder. With such an approach, he believes that the field will accelerate faster and further and bring benefits to all mankind.
- 6. Successful aging results
- Another new writer for the Anti-Aging Bulletin is Frank Shallenberger MD. Dr. Shallenberger has been practising Anti-Aging Medicine for nearly 20 years at his Nevada Anti-Aging Center. In this report, Dr. Shallenberger describes how one of his healthy 50-year old male patients came to him complaining of a 'reduction in energy and performance'. His patient is a former athlete, so he was perhaps able to define his 'feelings' more precisely and notice more subtle changes that had been occurring to himself. Dr. Shallenberger makes the point that this is most necessary and that in fact we shouldn't wait for changes to occur before acting upon them. As such, Dr. Shallenberger believes that aging must be treated in the 30's or 40's for maximum optimal benefits.
- 7. The bio-markers of aging
- Yet another new writer for the Anti-Aging Bulletin! This time it is also our first lady writer too! Jennifer Krup MD draws on her extensive experience and describes how in the RejuvenAge Clinic in London, they use biological aging markers to assess a patient's 'speed' of aging and how they interrupt those parameters to apply differing protocols and procedures. Acting upon those results can then benefit the patient by slowing and preventing their aging disorders.
WINTER 2001
- 1. Breakthroughs and Discoveries
- This issue may be one of the most 'revolutionary' copies we've produced to date. This is because we introduce the new di-peptide n-acetylcarnosine (NAC), which is an analogue to L-carnosine. What makes NAC important is that it has been clinically proven to be highly effective in the treatment of senile-cataract, and thus a breakthrough for this common age-related disorder. This issue also attempts to clear the misconception about oral L-carnosine dosages and compares the two di-peptides. Furthermore, we have the great Melatonin researcher Walter Pierpaoli MD, and he updates us with fantastic new evidence on the role and importance of this unique supplement.
- 2. NAC is it the cure for cataract?
- Vital new research is formulated by Robert Mason PhD about the role of the di-peptide n-acetylcarnosine or NAC. Essentially animal and human experiments over the last 8-years in Russia indicate that as an eye-drop NAC can effectively cure, reduce or prevent cataract after 3-5 months of use. NAC may also have other important roles in other eye complications and it is suggested that NAC is going to revolutionize the treatment of senile cataract and other aging disorders. An absolute must read for anyone concerned with a deteriorating eye-sight.
- 3. Interview with Mark Babizhayev Ph.D.
- Dr. Babizhayev is the principal Russian research scientist behind the development of NAC eye-drops. This exclusive interview highlights the premise and ideas behind his work as well as his thoughts about the possibilities of NAC eye-drops for the treatment of cataract. This interview follows on very nicely from the article to expound the precise mechanisms behind the action of NAC in the eye.
- 4. Interview with Marios Kyriazis M.D.
- Dr. Kyriazis is the UK's leading anti-aging physician and researcher and is one of the few people who has bothered to test 'ordinary aging' individuals with oral L-carnosine. His studies and reading indicate that mega dosages of L-carnosine are not required and that some of the by-products of L-carnosine may even be favorable. Before you start taking expensive large doses of L-carnosine read the evidence that suggests you shouldn't and recommends a more natural and normal dose.
- 5. How to Stop Aging (or Melatonin and Aging)
- We are privileged to announce that the world's leading Melatonin researcher and physician, Walter Pierpaoli MD has written an article about the latest developments in Melatonin research. Dr. Pierpaoli's book The Melatonin Miracle was the principal stimuli to the Melatonin movement and now he elaborates on his important work. Dr. Pierpaoli says that Melatonin is far more than just an anti-oxidant and the regulator of the circadian rhythmus. Indeed he suggests that Melatonin has a principle role in aging and is in-fact the protector of the pineal gland and by association the protector of the endocrine system and therefore hormonal regulation. Learn how and why this is the case and also learn how Melatonin can be improved with synergistic substances.
FALL 2001
- 1. Slowing aging, not just treating it!
- This issue provides some insight into products and protocols that appear to be efficacious in slowing aging or preventing the appearance of aging diseases and disorders. Normally, we can consider that most therapies are designed to treat a "problem" after it has occurred or indeed simply to mask those symptoms. Of course Anti-Aging Medicine is far more pro-active and considers the earliest possible diagnosis in order to eradicate serious future difficulties. Learn today about some of the clinically proven products and protocols that slow and prevent aging itself!
- 2. Aminoguanidine, the AGE inhibitor
- Phil Micans PharmB takes a look at the new generation of Advanced Glycosylation End product inhibitors. These protein-glucose-cell reactions are referred to as cross-linking and form one of the major accepted reasons why we age. Recent evidence of AGE-inhibitors and in particular aminoguanidine indicate that they can improve many conditions including heart, kidneys, skin, eyes and that they have an important role in diabetes. The assumption is made that such a product has important implications in slowing down the aging process itself, learn today how you this is possible!
- 3. Estrogen, the unrecognized male hormone
- Rick Cohen MD informs us (and indeed reminds us) that estrogen can become the dominant sex hormone in older men, statistics such as the average 59 year old man has more estrogen than a 54 year old woman bring that home! Dr. Cohen elaborates on the benefits of both estrogen and testosterone but that once this balance goes out of favor for testosterone a man's physique and his attitude change. Dr. Cohen lists a number of useful natural and drug substances that have shown great benefit in enhancing free testosterone and reducing estrogen in men, collimating in the formulation of a unique new topical Anti-Estrogen creme. A must read for any man under 40 and important for some under that age too!
- 4. Excitotoxins, the ultimate brain slayer
- Once again the biochemist James South MA undertakes some remarkable research that highlights another vital issue in the quest to stay younger longer. This time James takes us through the brain chemistry of glutamate and informs us of how each of us can poison ourselves everyday with common food ingredients that are literally destroying neurons. He highlights the need to avoid certain substances and how we can also help eradicate and protect ourselves against this "brain meltdown" with some supplements and drugs. As James states in the article "it makes little sense to pursue other anti-aging strategies, such as growth hormone, testosterone or estrogen replacement, cardiovascular fitness exercise, weight loss etc., while not doing everything possible to avoid excitotoxicity." Stop poisoning your brain today, read this article.
- 5. ATP, the energy of life
- Robert Mason PhD reminds us of the importance of ATP (adenosine triphosphate), the molecule behind life. He explains the generation of ATP and how a lack of ATP can lead to numerous "minor" complaints as well as major ones. He then reviews the various applications of ATP supplements around the world which is a long list and suggests that ATP can do so much more and help to fight against the battle of aging itself.
SUMMER 2001 This issue was replaced by an issue of the Anti-Aging Directory, which can be ordered from the on-line store.
SPRING 2001
- 1. Standing the test of time- Tried and tested Anti-aging Medicine
- One thing we don't do very often at IAS is go back and review products that we may have written about before. This is often because we are always looking forward to "new" things and the urgency that comes with telling you about them often might mean that we neglect "older" favorites. It's often a mistake to think if something has been around a while that it is not as good as something that is newer. It's been around for a reason, usually because it works and people make it popular. This is perhaps the first bulletin issue that reviews the "classics" in anti-aging medicine. Whilst it looks at these tried and tested drugs, it also updates the information on these most popular products. This is a bumper issue for the start of the 21st Century!
- 2. Deprenyl
- James South MA writes a brilliant update to this proven Longevity drug, find out why Deprenyl slows brain aging and extends life-span.
- 3. Don't Ergo the Ergots
- Robert Mason PhD takes us through the 3-most popularly used ergot derived drugs. These types of drugs have numerous "brain" actions and are used in preventative as well as curative fashions. The drugs concerned are Bromocriptine, Hydergine ® and Nicergoline, each one is individually viewed and the differences between them can be clearly seen.
- 4. Piracetam
- Once again James South MA, the renowned biochemist and expert on nootropic drugs, updates the research on the classic smart-drug Piracetam. If you have any interest in cognitive enhancement you should read this.
- 5. Gerovital-H3 ®
- Mircea Dumitru MD reiterates why Gerovital-H3 ® is still a classic anti-aging medicine with its wide diversity of effects. Dr. Dumitru over-views its chemistry to explain why one drug can have so many uses.
- 6. Centrophenoxine
- Titled as the psycho-energizer, Centrophenoxine remains at the forefront of anti-aging medicine. One of its most important roles is in the removal of toxic waste that enables cells to function better for longer. Discover for yourself how Centrophenoxine improves your chances against the Membrane Theory of Aging.
- 7. Questions and Answers
- A new section that hopefully will become a regular feature. We often get asked some interesting (or regular) questions, so we thought we publish some of them and our answers for all to read. These Q&As also appear in their own new section within this Anti-Aging website, click here to see them.
WINTER 2000
- 1. Beating Depression
- At the end of the last year of the 20th century, we look at one of the most common and most debilitating problems; the onset of depression. Sometimes there's a psychological region for it, (the loss of a loved one, or concern about the job or family etc.) But often there is no particular reason for it and then depression becomes a physiological problem. More often than not, depression becomes a more regular and intense problem as we age, this bulletin looks at some of the changes that take place in the brain. Moreover, it also looks at drugs and supplements that are in use to help prevent those changes from occurring and alleviate them if they do.
- 2. Beating depression the alternative anti-aging way
- James South MA looks at some of the alternative ways to treat depression. He describes many different factors within this multi-approach article and suggests various regimes, protocols and products that are clinically and scientifically proven to assist in anti-depression. As usual his depth of knowledge and clearness of structure allow the reader to understand a complicated subject and appreciate quickly what is possible. In particular he studies the tryptophans (L-Tryptophan and Oxitriptan or 5HTP), NADH, deprenyl (selegiline), 7-keto DHEA, phenytoin (Epanutin ® or Dilantin ®) and numerous support supplements in the shape of amino acids and vitamins.
- 3. Depression and SAMe
- Marios Kyriazis M.D. looks at the natural methyl donor SAMe and one of its most recognized and efficacious roles, that of a superb anti-depressant. You may be aware of SAMe's role in liver and heart functions, maybe even its role in arthritis and other disorders. Now here is an opportunity to learn about why it has so many roles and how SAMe works so well against depression.
- 4. The new generation of brain drugs and anti-depressants
- Dr. Robert Mason looks at 5 of the most recent and novel drugs that are being used in the battle against depression, and indeed even senile dementia such as Alzheimer's disease. He suggests to us that at long last the pharmaceutical industry is taking a wider view of depression and that the SSRIs are finally being overtaken with new and improved substances. His specific choices are reboxetine (Edronax ®), tianeptine (Stablon ®), galantamine (Nivalin ®), moclobemide (Manerix ®) and the Russian development of Picamilone (Pikamilon). If you are interested in keeping up-to-date in the drug world and the new pharmacological methods of action then this article must be viewed.
- 5. The antidepressant effects and action of Gerovital-H3 ®
- Once again Dr. Mircea Dumitru guides us through the reasons why Gerovital-H3 ® is such a broad ranged and multiple anti-aging drug. In this instance he tells us specifically about its most potent and well-known anti-depressant qualities. He explains the mode of action and benefit for the patient as well as the dosage and best method of application, and as in the case of all articles that appear in the IAS Anti-Aging Bulletin, he lists all the clinical and scientific references.
FALL 2000
- 1. The 1st Monte Carlo Antiaging Conference .
- This Bulletin's lead story is the great success of the 1st Monte Carlo Antiaging Conference . Aimed at health professionals it attracted over 150 like-minded professionals from all over the world. We were very pleased that so-many people turned up for what was our first organized event. With 10-speakers, each an expert in their own right and interested in or applying anti-aging medicine there was no doubt that the lectures would be a hit. But we are pleased to report that the whole event was flawless, excellent venue, superb cuisine, fabulous weather, great surroundings and like-minded longevists, combined with excellent and practical information. If you want to know more about the conference, or if you are interested in purchasing tapes of the lectures or wish to register for the next Monte Carlo Antiaging Conference , click here.
- 2. Acarbose, a new and important addition to anti-aging medicine.
- Dr. Dean discusses another diabetes development that may have important implications for anti-aging medicine. It is known that 4-major pillars of pro-aging are (A) Excess insulin (B) Excess glucose (C) Excess cortisol and (D) Excess free-radicals. Dr. Dean expounded these theories in his Neuroendocrine Theory Of Aging and one of his favorite supplements that he believes virtually everyone over 45 should be taking is Metformin. Now, he explains why Acarbose can be added to that list. Acarbose is designed to block the uptake of glucose and taken before or during a meal it helps prevent sugar peaks resulting in improved energy levels and mood throughout the day. Furthermore, Dr. Dean explains why this may be an excellent appetite suppressant and aid in the diet, especially if combined with Metformin.
- 3. B17, the controversial cancer fighter
- For many years, Laetrile or vitamin B17 as it has been come to be known has been a controversial treatment and preventative for cancer. James South MA looks into the clinical and scientific trials and studies the reasons why some folks think that it is an essential part of our diet, our natural cancer controller and others think it is a dangerous supplement. It's interesting to note that most of the science is in defensive of the product, whilst most of the thoughts and beliefs take on a political slant and form the negative side.
Mr. South looks at B17 as both a treatment for various forms of cancer to help control it and at the possibility of low dosages being used for preventative purposes over longer periods of time. Cancer is something that affects millions in our societies, and whilst it strikes at all ages tends to affect the elderly much more. It's worth reading this article to pique and stimulate your thoughts and see if you are interested in finding more out about B17, and indeed other alternative treatments in the cancer field. - 4. Arthritis and Gerovital-H3 ®
- Once again, Dr. Dumitru, the personal physician to Professor Ana Aslan (of Gerovital-H3 ® fame), looks at the role of her treatment in the cases of osteoarthritis (and some rheumatoid results too). He notes that it does have an overall beneficial benefit, both in helping to eliminate pain and improve bone structure and density. Gerovital-H3 ® has so many broad and beneficial benefits, in his series of in-depth articles Dr. Dumitru is explaining just why that is.
SUMMER 2000
- 1. Red Hot Reviews!
- This quarter some of the latest anti-aging supplements and new unique combination products are introduced. We look back on the last few years and update important information and changes that have taken place to the products and protocols being used in anti-aging medicine. Strangely, the issue could have perhaps been dedicated to hormone replacement therapies because three of the four articles look at major male and female hormones.
- 2. Carnosine, the new anti-aging supplement
- We're delighted to introduce Marios Kyriazis M.D., a British Gerontologist who is one of the few UK physicians who is seriously involved in the science of anti-aging medicine. Indeed Dr. Kyriazis has founded Britain's first anti-aging society - the British Longevity Society. In his first article for the IAS Anti-Aging Bulletin, Dr. Kyriazis informs us about L-Carnosine - an amino-acid (don't confuse this with L-carnitine.!) that has been discovered recently to have a number of anti-aging benefits including anti-oxidant, prevention of protein cross-linking, chelation, immune system stimulation and several others. Carnosine is set to become a major new and important supplement. Don't be the last to find out about it! Read this!
- 3. Reducing hormone related cancer risk.
- Jonathan Wright MD updates his original information regarding the use of natural estrogen cream that was a huge hit in the Summer 1998 IAS Anti-Aging Bulletin. In that issue, he informed the world about the use of horse derived estrogen that is being used in hormone replacement therapy and how natural human estrogens reduce the risks considerably. There are concerns that the two potent estrogens - estradiol and estriol have carcinogenic properties (although the major estrogen- estrone is believed to be anti-carcinogenic). Dr. Wright hypothesizes that it is the presence of estradiol in men that causes prostate problems and that this is far more likely than the presence of DHT. He continues with the latest supplements that have shown promise in the reduction of cancer in both men and women and recommendations for those pursuing a hormonal replacement program to seriously reduce their long-term "risks."
- 4. Testosterone replacement, using prohormone supplements.
- Another new writer for the IAS Anti-Aging Bulletin this period is Rick Cohen MD. Dr. Cohen introduces us to the world of safer testosterone supplementation with the use of testosterone precursors. Testosterone may be the single most important supplement that aging men need to take in order to help restore youthful vitality, vigor, sex drive and energy. Dr. Cohen guides through the whys-and-wherefores of what is safe and what is effective. There's a lot of hype and misinformation about testosterone replacement, we hope that this article helps set straight some of the wrongs and point out some of the rights. If you're a man don't miss it!
- 5. DHEA, the next generation.
- Once again our brilliant biochemist James South MA takes us on a journey of discovery. Since IAS was one of the very first companies in the world to offer DHEA, we have been through the complete gambit of free based, sulphate and micronized versions, we've moved on and reasoned the benefits of each as time has gone by. Now there is 7-keto DHEA. What's the difference? How does it work? Does it do any less or anymore than other forms of DHEA? Should I be using it? Ask yourself all these questions and more, but you won't know the answers unless you read this article!
SPRING 2000
- 1. Weight Loss, helping you through the maze.
- This quarter the bulletin discuss the facts and fictions of weight control, you will be refreshed to learn that this is written with science and realism, there are no get slim fixes here. We don't discuss the latest weight loss drugs, with their potent and potentially serious side effects are likely problems for the future. But we do discuss the safe and effective use of nutrients and some pharmaceuticals and the correct approach to weight management and expose the great fallacies of the diet and food industry.
- 2. Metformin, a safe and effective life extension drug is also useful for dieting.
- Ward Dean MD returns to one of his favorite pharmaceuticals- Metformin. Having exposed its fundamental role in the treatment of adult onset diabetes and how everyone is afflicted by this with aging, we also discover that the stabilization of insulin has a pivotal role in the management of body mass and composition. If you are interested in anti-aging medicine (or indeed in weight control and dieting) you must learn about Metformin.
- 3. Weight Loss, the anti-aging way.
- James South MA, one of the most brilliant thinkers in the anti-aging industry once again takes a critical insight into the current thinking of weight loss and points out the scientific facts that exposes many of the fallacies of the dieting industry. He manages to condense an excellent overview but with great detail at the points where it matters, he concludes the article on some of the nutritional and pharmacological proven methods to control muscle and fat composition.
- 4. GHB, a powerful growth hormone secretagogue.
- Dr. Dean highlights the scientific and clinical evidence that supports GHB as a potent agonist of growth hormone, both in i.v. and oral administrations. He also highlights efficacious personal and patient experience with this natural drug. Meanwhile GHB is likely to disappear from the US market, maybe from the world market? Why? Because the FDA continue to misinform and spread unsubstantiated rumors of "deaths and comas" in their "scary" press-releases, those releases are then repeated in the WHO edicts.
Whether or not you believe in conspiracy theories or cynicism these tactics are paving the way to remove a natural substance that has been available for nearly 30-years, place it into a controlled substance category (with severe penalties for possession without a prescription) and allow drug companies to release "approved" and patented versions at extortionate prices. Maybe you can't believe something like that would happen? Well it's already been done to the essential amino-acid L-Tryptophan and is being done now to GHB, watch this space!

- 1. GHB, The Elixir of Life!
- IAS looks at the amazing and controversial natural supplement GHB and a precursor and legal replacement for it in America called Renewtrient ®.
This is your opportunity to hear the clinical facts about the 30 plus years of efficacious GHB use from around the world. Ward Dean MD and James South MA put the record straight and the facts couldn't be more different from the hysterical USA media reports and the American authorities call for a ban. GHB is natural, it's in many foods and drinks, it's in your cells now! There are so-many beneficial uses for GHB including sleep enhancement, antidepressant, sexual arousal, weight loss, muscle gain, stress reducer and brain normalizer and yet there are just a few basic guidelines to ensure complete safety.
