 Amantadine (Symmetrel) - Manufacturer's Insert

Chemical: Each Symmetrel capsule contains 100mg Amantadine Hydrochloride.

Inactive Ingredients: Lactose, povidone, magnesium stearate, red iron oxide (E172), titanium dioxide (E171), gelatin and white printers ink.

Classification: Symmetrel is used to treat Parkinson’s disease; it improves muscle control and reduces stiffness. Symmetrel is also used in the treatment of herpes zoster (shingles), where it has been shown to reduce pain.

Precautions: You must not take Symmetrel capsules if;

  • You have ever has a rash or other possible allergic reaction to any of the ingredients in Symmetrel listed.
  • You are pregnant, planning to become pregnant or breast feeding.
  • You have ever had or you suffer from a stomach ulcer.
  • You suffer from any serious kidney disease.

Other Warnings: Be careful when drinking alcohol - it may affect you more than usual. If you feel dizzy, light headed, have blurred vision or have difficulty in concentrating after treatment with Symmetrel, do not drive or work with machinery until this effect has worn off. Symmetrel is not generally recommended for children under 10 years of age.

Directions for use: Your doctor will decide when and how to treat you with Symmetrel. It is important to take your medicine as instructed by your doctor. Swallow your capsules whole with a drink of water.
The usual dosage is:
Parkinson's disease: Adults; 100mg a day for the first week, increasing to 100mg twice a day. Higher doses, up to 400mg a day may be given in some cases.
Adults over 65 years; 100mg once a day.
Do not stop taking this medicine suddenly since your Parkinson's disease may get worse very quickly. Ask you doctor and he will reduce your dose gradually if it needs to be lowered.
Herpes zoster (shingles): 100mg twice a day for 14-days.

Overdose: If you accidentally take too many capsules or someone else takes any of your medicine you should consult your doctor immediately.
Unpleasant Side Effects: If any of the following occur you should tell your doctor immediately: Dizziness or light-headedness, fainting, convulsions (fits).

Storage: Do not use this medicine once the expiry date printed on the box has passed.
