Galantamine preserves brain function
Galantamine (currently being marketed as RAZADYNE in USA) inhibits the break-down of acetylcholine, the brain’s primary messenger neurotransmitter
Galantamine is the drug extract from a member of the snow-drop family. It is reported to delay or even reverse mental decline in some patients with mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease.
Galantamine is thought to work by boosting levels of the chemical messenger acetylcholine in the brain. In Alzheimer's disease, the cells that produce acetylcholine deteriorate.
Galantamine also acts to stimulate the brain’s nicotine receptors. This action has been noted as an indication of Galantamine’s role as an anti-depressant. Anecdotal evidence points to Galantamine also having a potential role in weight loss, due to its appetite suppressant affect.
