Medical contraindications/warnings state that Viagra should never be taken alongside organic nitrate medications, which are used to treat cardiovascular and hypotensive (low blood pressure) conditions. Regardless of whether nitrates are being taken, people with heart problems are also advised to exercise caution in relation to Viagra use.

Research has suggested that Viagra may help with erectile dysfunction and loss of libido associated with the use of antidepressants. One particular study involving women on antidepressant medications found that Viagra/Sildenafil was also able to boost their sex drive and libido.

Viagra’s development

Viagra/Sildenafil was developed by the pharmaceutical group Pfizer, and grew out of initial research into treatment for hypertension/high blood pressure and angina.

The discovery that it could help produce sustained erections, and in fact had little impact on angina, changed the course of its development.

When launched in 1998, Viagra/Sildenafil made history in the US as the first approved oral treatment for erectile dysfunction.
