Viagra has become a byword in erectile dysfunction treatment and erectile dysfunction remedies. Prized for its effectiveness as a pde5 inhibitor – a key factor in impotence erectile dysfunction – Viagra is the well known brand name for the drug Sildenafil Citrate.
People who experience impotence erectile dysfunction and seek out erectile dysfunction remedies are not alone. It’s estimated that 15 per cent of the male population experience erection problems and impotence at some time in their lives. In the US alone, impotence affects around 31 million men, and globally the number may be as high as 300 million. Growing older also increases the likelihood of needing help with erectile dysfunction treatment and pde5 inhibitor remedies. In fact, more than half of men over the age of 60 are affected to some degree by erectile dysfunction, or ED for short.
The use of a pde5 inhibitor treatment such as Viagra can be effective, as this is the enzyme at the heart of impotence. Pde5 (short for Phosphodiesterase type-5) forms a natural part of the body’s erectile tissue. Also key is a bodily substance known as Cyclic guanosine monophosphate – or Cyclic GMP – which is produced during sexual arousal to trigger the blood flow and muscular changes behind an erection. Problems are caused by pde5’s action to break down Cyclic GMP, turning off the ability to achieve and sustain healthy erections.
In short, the balance of too little Cyclic GMP or too much pde 5 produced by the body can lead to erectile dysfunction and impotence. Viagra addresses this imbalance by inhibiting pde5 to promote the Cyclic GMP process.
Viagra’s success has been driven by its ease of use and fast long-lasting action. Taken orally, the drug is quickly absorbed and coursing through the body within 30 to 120 minutes. This is perhaps crucial in relation to the spontaneous ‘in the moment’ nature of sexual activity.
Viagra has been found to be effective for up to four hours, and is typically taken an hour before sexual intercourse.
The common dosage for Viagra is 25mg to 100mg, with the average dose equalling 50mg. Reported side effects include anxiety, dizziness and nasal congestion and, on rare occasions, diarrhoea, muscle pain, skin rashes and urinary or respiratory-tract infection.
Medical contraindications/warnings state that Viagra should never be taken alongside organic nitrate medications, which are used to treat cardiovascular and hypotensive (low blood pressure) conditions. Regardless of whether nitrates are being taken, people with heart problems are also advised to exercise caution in relation to Viagra use.
Research has suggested that Viagra may help with erectile dysfunction and loss of libido associated with the use of antidepressants. One particular study involving women on antidepressant medications found that Viagra/Sildenafil was also able to boost their sex drive and libido.
Viagra/Sildenafil was developed by the pharmaceutical group Pfizer, and grew out of initial research into treatment for hypertension/high blood pressure and angina.
The discovery that it could help produce sustained erections, and in fact had little impact on angina, changed the course of its development.
When launched in 1998, Viagra/Sildenafil made history in the US as the first approved oral treatment for erectile dysfunction.
Fast forward to today and Viagra is a multi billion dollar success story – a drug that is prized for delivering a no-fuss, fast and effective treatment for impotence and ED.
And in becoming a globally recognised brand and treatment, Viagra has also helped to lift the lid and banish some of the taboos associated with this age-old problem.
The fact that Viagra treatment addresses an underlying physiological imbalance at the centre of impotence (triggered by the effects of pde5 on the male reproductive system) also helps to dispel the shame and embarrassment associated with this condition. Knowing there is an effective treatment, that’s been successfully used by millions of people around the world, brings erectile dysfunction out of the dark and into the realms of everyday life.
